Effective leadership starts with ourselves
For more than 25 years, I have supported leaders, project managers and teams in their personal and social development. The focus is not simply on learning leadership and communication techniques, but first on taking a conscious look at our own patterns, attitudes and values: What shapes the way I act – and how do I affect others?
Communication, collaboration and leadership build on this foundation. Methods and techniques then become more than superficially learned formulas: they can be applied consciously and appropriately to the situation – from conscious self-leadership through constructive collaboration to effective leadership.
Development in three steps
Personal, social and leadership competence build on one another – from conscious self-leadership through constructive collaboration to effective leadership.
Personal competence – conscious self-leadership
Sustainable change does not begin with new techniques alone, but with a better understanding of our own patterns of thinking and behaviour. What attitudes and values lie behind them? What supports me – and where might I be getting in my own way?
Especially when it comes to our own patterns of thinking and behaviour, we often lack the necessary distance. An outside perspective can help reveal blind spots, open up new perspectives and make our impact on others more visible.
Greater self-awareness creates clarity and choice. Instead of automatically following familiar patterns, I can make more conscious decisions about how I want to act in a particular situation.
Self-leadership also means taking responsibility for our own actions and their impact. This expands our range of action and allows change to grow from a deeper level of understanding.
Social competence – constructive collaboration
Those who understand themselves better can also engage with others more openly and clearly. The key is to recognize different perspectives, listen carefully and understand what lies behind positions, expectations and reactions.
Communication is more than a technique. Our own patterns of thinking and behaviour also shape the way we interact with others. The more consciously we deal with them, the better we can stand by our own position while remaining connected with the other person.
This creates greater flexibility in working with colleagues, employees, managers and customers. Misunderstandings can be recognized earlier, conflicts can be resolved more constructively and relationships can become more resilient.
Leadership competence – leading others effectively
Good leadership builds on personal and social competence. Those who know themselves well, take responsibility for their own actions and can understand different perspectives have a strong foundation for leading others.
This is where concrete leadership tools and methods come in: providing direction, clarifying goals and expectations, delegating tasks and decision-making authority effectively, giving feedback, making decisions and remaining capable of acting even in difficult situations.
Effective leadership combines personal clarity, attitude and concrete leadership behaviour. The key is to transfer what has been learned into real situations, reflect regularly on your own impact and continue to develop your leadership approach deliberately.
From training to practice
Complex situations are rarely complex for technical reasons alone. Different interests, expectations and personal perspectives often play a decisive role in whether collaboration works well or becomes stuck.
Since 2000, I have been developing and facilitating seminars on personal and social competence as well as leadership development. This work began with open-enrollment seminars for Siemens and later expanded to programs for project managers and multi-stage leadership development programs.
What matters most is the connection between reflection and practical application. Exercises, real situations from everyday work and working on participants’ own cases help turn insights into practice and make it possible not only to understand new ways of acting, but to try them out and integrate them into everyday work.
In multi-stage programs, participants gather experience between sessions and reflect on it together afterwards. Depending on the situation, I work with individual leaders as well as entire leadership teams through seminars, workshops and coaching. This creates a development process that goes beyond individual training days and addresses real challenges.
